Jdavis882 - Knife Sharpening and Reviews
Приєднався 13 лип 2007
I started this channel because I love to learn, and I also love sharing the knowledge I gather with you guys. I get a lot of personal satisfaction from this so I will continue to make 7-9 videos per week. My goal is to keep this channel fresh while still providing quality info to the knife community.

Sorry. This video sucks. Out of focus most of the video. But here it is.

Good Time to Buy Hinderers

The price on these has dropped significantly. Now is a great time to grab one if you've been put off by the price in the past.

When you gonna release some new content? Great video, by the way!
12 years late to the party, but thanks for the vid.
Thank you!
If one has a light enough touch, one can actually feel the bur dragging.
I need later lockup
Thats impressive!, it really is, but the sharper your blade the quicker and easier damage to the blade happens. I totally respect this but one slice through a squirrels process and its at its target sharp. Depending on the metal grade of course. Nice work!
There is diminishing return on sharpening, for sure. I enjoy taking it to the extreme but in every day practice, I don’t strive for hair whittling. Just “very sharp.”
𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘦
Doesn't it stink!?
Slightly, yes. But it’s not like a strong chemical smell.
If your knives aren’t dirty then you’re not using them.
Thats awesome. Crazy when people mention maxamet and chipping, but seemingly haven't actually used the steel. Just saying what they have heard. I found one on ebay for 105.with tax. Should arrive today! Seller answered my questions, should be good
Right on
Apex Overheating
We call it a stove, the oven is the lower enclosed portion where we bake or roast in. We don't know what an eye of the oven is but in Maryland (South-Mason Dixon line), we would say the burner on stove. Hope that helps. Great information regarding the grit difference between white and the green. I don't ever recall any manufacturer ever clearly indicating the difference between the two!
Great info for someone just learning stropping. Any chance you can post links where you get your strops and compounds? Any other useful links would be helpful
Chefknivestogo for the compounds. Stropman or knivesplus for the strops.
Is the green compound supposed to feel waxy and have some resistance when stropping the knife after you have loaded it
Yep. A little. But make sure you’re not using too much. It shouldn’t be built up on the leather. Just worked into the leather and not a layer on top.
😮9 edge leading and 8 edge trailing strokes raised a burr, that steel must be made of playdough, I don't know if I ever got to hair whittling sharp with a micro bevel, or had hair whittling sharp blade with a factory edge, I've stropped factory edges to hair whittling sharp, I'm not saying it can't be done but I don't think I ever got there.😮
Nah it was just a thin edge. The actual apex was much more acute than the 40 ish degrees on the I was sharpening at. So it only took a few strokes to throw on a 40 degree micro bevel.
So I’ve watched quite a few strip videos and no one has really answered this definitively, can you use compound on the smooth leather side or is that only meant to be used bare?
I do. But only with diamond sprays.
Very informative I’m just getting into the hobby thanks brother
What do you think one is worth now days? I have one just like this.. same cut out, no detent ball, black screws on the clip and original box.
Really no clue at all! If you find out let me know!
Benchmade is trash and thumb lock/pivot lock is crap. Spyderco is way better
I really like some benchmades.
MASSIVELY IMPRESSIVE . Epic . I'm gonna try to improve .
The Spydie knife, regrind that bitch to 40° yo (in a Jessee Pinkman voice). Seriously, start making 30 or 40 your standard with a lean towards 40. It makes life simpler if you carry around a bunch of different knives and they all grind to one of two sizes. Is that weird 45° angle gonna make it better? No, it ain't. Regrind that bitch to 40° yo. And use a blue marker. ;-)
You’re not, not centered because one angle is more obtuse than the other….your angles can be exactly the same, there’s just more material on one side of center than the other. If one angle was more obtuse than the other, you would need to change your angle on one side. Like you said though, you just need to take off more material on the small side (while maintaining the same angle)
I think it's stupid to say that I'm not stupid for not knowing how to use the compound on the strop, seriously.
lol.
That clip is a car scratcher…
Yep! Done it.
Wow! Sharp!
I have this sharpener and cannot get an edge. I keep the angle consistent and have ZT, Spyderco, Emerson, Hoffner, and high quality German kitchen knives and cannot sharpen them anywhere near “sharp”… idkw, but am frustrated about it. You have done a great video and thank you. I’ll try your proprietary method.
Ever get the hang of it?
I like the videos that allow me to click on different parts so if I’m bored I don’t have to keep watching the boring parts to get to what I want to know.
Yeah. This video was made WAY before that feature was available. Most of my videos are over a decade old.
Your retarded
What is the difference between using the 40 Vs 30 angle? which makes a sharper edge ?
Edge angle doesn’t define sharpness. But it does affect ease of cutting. A more acute edge angle will glide through material easier than a more obtuse edge. Both 30 and 40 can be just as sharp as each other because sharpness is a function of how refined the apex is.
What's really going on here? I have lectured but not like this. All of my drawing, charts, visual aids were either completed or in my mind is such a manner that I could draw it perfectly when lecture time came. A little homework by many UA-cam host could go a long way in educating their audience. This is not the way to conduct a tutorial. It's sloppy to say the least. He might have great in-site of his topic but it doesn't not come off that way to this viewer.
lol. I’m not a lecturer. Just some dude sharing knowledge for free. No obligation to watch it. 👍🏻
You have experience, knowledge, and a willingness to share. Others can benefit from your videos. So, don't shortchange your videos by being so casual. You know you can present good videos so get to it. Do a little prep and you will even feel better about expending that time in something worthwhile for all of us! Just put yourself as being an audience. What do you like and expect?@@jdavis882
If you think 6oz is nothing when carrying anything then you probably only wear jeans and cargo pants/shorts . I also wish I could go back in time and get this knife.
I feel much differently now. I carry the lightest knife I can.
It’s like watching two monkeys, trying to fuck a football 🙄
This helped me to understand, thank you.
7 to 9 videos a week huh? Well buddy it’s been over 3 years now sooooooo?
It’s so hard for me to make a video now. Every time I think about making one I just feel like I have nothing to say worth recording. There’s so many good knife channels now that I probably don’t have anything worth adding to the community.
1 12oz can pressurized and try again! Lots of fun! Stay safe!
THANK YOU for being the first person to remember that a knife is a three dimensional object, pointing out the exact spots to measure, and using a knife with a very small bevel!
Hello i just watched your video just want to ask is there any knife that has a design of off center edge or is it every knife is need to be centered?
It’s not about the design, but more about the skill of the person doing the initial sharpening. Some extremely cheap knives have perfect edges, and some very expensive knives have off center edges. It’s just the luck of the draw.
9/11 WAS real, thanks
I've been using the Edge Pro for 5-6 years, but this is the first I've seen the collar. Awesome add-on and thanks for the heads up! For anyone else looking, I believe it's a 5/16 drill collar.
Hope it makes your life a little easier!
Gotta split it down the middle
Splitting it down the middle is actually far easier than what’s shown here.
I suppose you could use a heat gun or hair dryer instead of a stove burner when melting your compound into the strop.
HeeHee .. I'm from NYC. My Gr.GrandMother _(Virginia)_ & Paternal GrandParents _(S. Carolina)_ always called it *"The Eye."* They called TV's that also. My Mother & Aunts (NYC) called it *The Jet.*
Hair dryer for heating the strop .
😊 just got the edge pro love it. Got tired of the clamped kme and others because of uneven bevels especially on spyderco's, thnxs for the advice on the drill stop collar.
Hi All,also , can you geta S110 V this sharp with these stones or do you need diamond?
Hi All, is the 3rd stone set, the ultra fine stone, the ones form Spyderco?
Grabbed a cheap clamp from harbor freight for $1.79. Job done. Thank you so much!
Will this work in Australia?
Just buy a nice Chinese made knife. They come perfect out of the box and are 4x cheaper and 5x nicer looking
You do you.
Would that work on a sebenza 31? Since the 31 has different lock geometry now.
